They say smells are very evocative of memories. A whiff of lemon pledge and childhood spring cleaning memories flare, lilac and there was that time you hid under Grandmother's lilac bushes, the scent of instant ramen, and whap, it's back to college where the hallway carpet was always kinda dank, and that surly girl who refused to be in the same room as anyone else (it's why she failed her classes) was 'cooking'.

Songs do the same thing. A song comes on the radio and sometimes you can remember somewhere you were or something you did when that song was playing. Case in point, I was driving with my Dad and 'Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone' came on. His face lit up and he told me about driving around in one of his childhood friends' car with their whole gang and listening to that song.

Today, it happened to me. I was playing old tapes (yes, tapes. that's how old they are) that used to be in my car when I was driving the steadfast Buick, and Dura Europus by David Byrne came on. There was a sudden and instant flashback to sitting in my dorm room, probably doodling a time traveller or actually working on an assignment and having that song vibrate my floorboards from the room over ( Hi [livejournal.com profile] slayersyrena!). All I need to go back in time myself is the Akira theme and the INFORMATION HIGH song. And that Space Ghost song CD that [livejournal.com profile] lithrael had.

There were probably songs I listened to on repeat too, but the only one I can think of right now is REM's 'End of the World' song. Anybody who was there remember?
