singing 'bout a lost highway
May. 25th, 2008 10:00 amI saw a snake yesterday. Amazon warrior that I am, I waved my purse at it and shooed it away until a broom was brought for me to carry it off with. A garden hoe would've been my first choice, but the purse worked just fine until the broom was brought. It was just a black snake, but it struck my purse a few times. Non-venomous snakes don't worry me like their poisonous cousins do, but I still like to avoid getting bitten at all if I can.
It took me until last year to start carrying a purse. I don't carry that much stuff with me and I'm likely to put the purse down somewhere and forget it. But I have a purse now, and I have to admit that it makes a dandy snake-handling tool. If Snakey feels like biting, the purse is a shield. If Snakey needs to be relocated, a purse can be thumped along the ground behind it to get it going, and plunked in front of it if it decides to duck back toward the house.
We also had to stop the snake from running across the road because a car was coming. When the snake bolted anyway, we had to follow it to keep a different truck from hitting it. Kudos to Heather's Uncle David for being a good sport and an excellent roadblock.
