The first peek of sunlight over the Barrow horizon. That's all we got, and then it set again. But it's something! It's light and color in an arctic world! And the storm broke enough for us to see it. All good.

Okay. Serious, academic question... Why do people live there? Is it just tradition, bragging rights, or is there some important industry/natural resource in the area? Just wonderin....

Serious, academic answer.

Well, I do know that ancient peoples lived here because there's an ancient village where they're still finding ancient stuff in it. I guess that once a people get settled it takes worse than this to drive them off.

And I can understand that. Looking around my room certainly makes me think that staying another year would be easier than packing and moving all my junk. I can also admit to a certain gloating glee in being able to top anyone's bad weather story. There's a level of pride that comes from being able to live here.

As for natural resources, I don't know much about that. I have heard that now that the Northwest Passage is clearing, they're thinking of moving a Coast Guard station up here. On hearing that news, one of my colleagues elbowed me and said, "You know what that means, doncha?" When I looked blank, she added. "A new crop of Coast Guard babies! And what the heck, this town needs new blood anyway." Dim bulb that I am, that took a second to sink in. Wow. Ok.

Did that answer your question?
