I don't know if I ever posted about it before, but I recently stumbled over an old half-idea I had after watching the first Hobbit movie.

What if a zombie virus broke out down in the depths of Erebor? There were so many dwarves, and they were all so scattered throughout the mountain that how long would it take before any of them noticed? How far would it spread before they understood? The people of Dale probably wouldn't know until either the survivors managed to escape and warn them, or the dwarves stopped coming entirely and some plucky humans decided to go see what had happened.

Imagine the dark and elaborate halls crawling with zombie dwarves. If they had succumbed with their armor on, how hard would they be to kill?

This brings us to the dragon. Smaug would be a hero if he purged the mountain of the virus, even if that isn't why he came. Maybe the elves were the ones that called him in. Extra betrayal there. But he could flamethrower his way and just torch the halls until all sounds of movement finally stopped.

Anyway, just a thought that led to several more thoughts.

Gette came to visit and we went to see Desolation of Smaug again and I had a random thought. Dwarves are what, four feet tall? The inside of Erebor is big enough for a giant dragon to move around freely. If the dwarves of old had built gates and halls a little closer to their own size, it would've been a lot harder for Smaug to get in. I'm not saying it would've stopped him completely, but it would've taken him a lot longer. Maybe the dwarves would have time to evacuate the non-combatants and set up a feasible defense while Smaug had to claw the stone doors and hallways wide enough to squeeze into.

The scene that inspired the fic. "Nice manners for a thief. And a liar." I loved Smaug. He was so badass and full of himself.

Wow, the wind is still howling. I was laying in bed this morning hoping and hoping for a snow day, which we can only get if the temperature drops below -40. The windchill did. The temperature didn't. It hardly seems fair. I'm just hoping I don't have bus duty again today. I did yesterday. My feet were aching and I was trying to figure out why as I stood in the howling wind and then it occurred to me that they were just cold. Really cold.

I usually have warm little feet. There's only so much warmth you can generate standing in the snow with the wind off the arctic ocean tearing at you, I guess. Maybe all the cold is why I did today's 31_days fic about dragons.

Burning. )

In the meantime, marvel at this. Mixed genres are fun! (Thanks [livejournal.com profile] blackvelvetclad!)
