Can't Fight Fate
Jan. 17th, 2007 05:10 pmIt's like I'm SUPPOSED to be sick...
I've had the lingering stages of the Crawling Crud since before Christmas, but it waited until last Sunday evening to regroup and attack in full force again. The regular Nyquil/Sudafed cocktail wasn't cutting it anymore, so I gave in and decided to go to the doctor and get some good stuff. Monday is MLK Day SO the hospital is closed. SO I go in on Tuesday. Waited for hours. And given the level of pestilence that was in the waiting room with me, if I hadn't already been chock-full of my own germs, I would've been swamped by the overflow from everyone else.
A kid threw up into her Mom's hands next to me. Two more little tykes sat in the floor. They would blow their noses on a tissue, then pretend to wash things (the floor, the chairs, the counters, etc) with the same tissues, then blow their noses again. An elderly woman was heaving out wet, rattling coughs. A girl with a broken arm was just sitting in pale, twitchy silence. There were several assorted people with assorted horrible coughs and sniffles. We used up two boxes of tissue while I was there. Yet another child was kicking a donut around the floor like a hockey puck. Then, before I could stop her, she picked it up and ate it.
I went to go sit on the heater, partly to get away from them, and partly because I hadn't been able to shake a chill all day. I finally got called back to the doctor by 6pm. The pharmacy closed at 5:30. So no meds for me. I went home grumbling.
SO I waited all today for the prescription to be filled. When it was finally ready I go over there only to have all roads to the hospital blocked by police cars with flashing lights. They are having a disaster drill which involves every police car, firetruck, ambulance, and medical person in town. SO I had to park two blocks away and walk through the freezing cold, in coat that lost its zipper just this morning, and came within arm's reach of being flattened by someone taking a corner on their snowmobile without looking, all for just a handful of antibiotics and some Flonaze.
I just hope they work. I'm starting to get Sudafed hangovers which I hadn't even realized was possible.
