Happy Day After Christmas!

On Christmas Eve, we all went to see the Barrow Christmas pageant. It was truly weird. We knew it would be. All small-town holiday programs have that certain sense of the dull-yet-bizarre, but this went well beyond my expectations! It was the Nativity in the Arctic. First of all, the church was overrun by little kids who would not sit still. The little guy in front of me couldn't see, so he stood up in the pew, leaned over to put his hands on the pew in front of him and bobbed up and down in a push-up kinda way for the duration. About all I could see was his bobbing butt. Every now and then, the woman sitting next to this child would say mildly. "You should sit down..." She was ignored.

Another amusing thing about this pageant was that the curtains didn't even open for the first half hour. The choir sang ala early 'Sister Act'. The kids in the pew behind us started rattling our pew. The pageant went slowly. There were five scenes. Mary and Joseph in the Igloo, the angels appearing to the shepherds, the angels coming to Mary and Joseph, the shepherds coming to the igloo, and the wise men coming to the igloo. The scripture was read first in Inupiat, then in English.

It was strange. Everyone moved very slowly and didn't speak. It dragged on and on. Sitting there in the dark, we were using the light of [livejournal.com profile] cloverbutt's cell phone to try and read the program. We were desperate to figure out where we were in it so that we would know how much longer it would go. I decided to adopt the motto of Possum Lodge: When all else fails, play dead. I went limp and let it pass over me. The laughter was almost hysterical when we got back to the car.

On Christmas Day, we just hung out. We opened presents, played with our toys, watched our movies, and ate a whole lot of chocolate. The Whitman's Sampler barely made it to afternoon. We got some of those remote control tanks that give you a shock when your tank gets hit, a video game to play on the tv, movies, and music, and my newest toy is an mp3 player I named Smiley. We laid around all day, watching Muppets, and AbFab, and Unsolved Mysteries. Oh, and Garden State. My sister got that.
Pretty awesome!

Today the Christmas games start. We'll see how that goes.
