Never a dull moment.
Jun. 14th, 2008 10:45 amPanic! Pandemonium!
Got a call early this morning. Baby sister's in the hospital, soon to be sans appendix. Folks spent the rest of the morning frantic, looking for fastest flight to Des Moines (which is underwater, by the way). All flight have either already left or bounce around so much that they still wouldn't get there until tomorrow anyway. So, they decided to drive. It's an eleven hour jaunt. I'm staying home to run the crisis information center and coordinate movements in the field. I'm also the calvary if the car breaks down on the way.
Sooo. I'm torn. On one hand, it's my baby sister (ignoring her adult status and the fact that she's taller than me) and I should be there to pester her before and after surgery. On the other, she seemed ok on the phone, not worried or pained or anything, and it's an eleven hour drive (22 in all) with my crazed parents to a flooded area where everything I do will make things worse. Trust me on this one. When people are stressed, I respond by involuntarily becoming annoying. I don't mean to. I scramble to avoid it. But when times are tense, nothing I do is the right thing. If I try to help I'm in the way. If I try to stay out of the way, I'm useless. I can't win.
So, it's probably for the best. The good news is that my dreams were much better last night. Sort of a combination of Lady in the Water (which I watched just before bed) and last summer's visit to Wales, and having to move from one apartment to another. Not a single fatality!
