Kiddie books are better than they were in my day. When I was in grade school, I had to sneak out of the Kids Corner to get to Lord of the Rings and the big James Herriot collections.

I've been reading from the elementary school's library. There are so many cute series books for youngsters these days. I was looking for the last two in the Spiderwick Chronicles, which I've been reading leisurely for the last four years or so. The library only had up to book 4, so I'll have to go to the public library to look, but I did find two other series that looked promising, so I got the first book in each, plus some others.

Guardians of Ga'hoole: It's about owls. Little owls that are stolen by strange owls and taken to a place where all the owlish-ness is brain-washed out of them to prepare them as soldiers against the rest of owl-dom in a great war. Shades of Watership Down's Efrafa.

Secrets of Dripping Fang: Twin siblings live in a miserable orphanage until they are adopted by scary spinster sisters and taken to the Dripping Fang Forest. After which things get weirdly worse. Shades of Series of Unfortunate Events.

The Monsters of Morley Manor: A weird one. It's got monsters and aliens and dimension-hopping, and ghosts and clones, and a were-spaniel.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane The most poignant of them. It's about a toy rabbit who gets lost and all the people who find and 'own' him for awhile. He's a little girl's best friend, an elderly couple's hobby, a hobo's traveling companion, a dying child's only toy, a scarecrow, and others, until he gets where he's going. It's sweet and sad and shows people at their best and their worst.

I also got a new Courtney Crumrin comic to read. Squee!

Four books in one weekend isn't too bad. I haven't sat down just to read in a long time. And granted, these aren't deep, life-changing, informative books. But I was never a fan of Oprah's Book Club and what the heck? I work with children. Why shouldn't I read their books? My sister also gave me a stack of new reading material.
