I've become my mother.

A child comes up to me with a festering owie and I immediately dig my thumbnail in to see if there's any gunk that need to come out, all the while saying encouraging things like, "Tell me if this hurts."

Little Evelyn wins the trooper award. She's got a fingernail that's only hanging on because it's embedded in a pillow of scabs and dried pus. Everyday I scrape the mess clean and pour alcohol in it. She never even flinches. Except for that once when a corner of band-aid adhesive stuck to the fingernail and gave it an unpleasant yank she wasn't expecting. And even then she just jumped a little.

She's tough as nails... unless someone takes her place in line which just breaks her heart and sends her crying to me. It's hard to be four years old.

Cheers to Evelyn for being such a super troop. I can't imagine not flinching under those circumstances!

You still need to give me a list of ideas for your bday. Time grows short!

For me?

Um, ok. Uh...

Draw me a sharpie comic! Characters of your choice. With a little bit of everything... Secrets revealed, Shakespeare quoted, a sword fight, maybe even a gratuitous shower scene, that sort of thing. Surprise me!

Alcohol kills new cell growth. it's good at first but can lead to a continued open wound if used for more than a day of so. Same with peroxide. Anti-bacterial soap and water is the best. I recommend Dial. But give it up to the kid. We've all been through it and it made us who we are today.

All we have in the first aid kit is alcohol and Vaseline and band-aids. I do make her wash with the regular soap in between medications. The band-aids always smelled so bad when I changed them, that I had to clean it out somehow.

The good news is that the mess is finally drying up and it looks like the fingernail isn't going to fall off after all. Small mercies!

Awww. Poor kid. And here I was going insane after a mere hotglue burn...

I've lost some skin to the hot glue gun myself. Aloe vera gel is your friend.
