Everybody's been talking about the Coast Guard divers who were killed. The crazier a small town's gossip, the more sane it keeps us. But this is pretty weird.

The scuttlebutt around town is that the divers were supposed to be at 20 feet and were suddenly yanked down to 200, where the pressure killed them. There was still air in their tanks and they weren't damaged (like bitten or sucker-marked or anything) except for the usual decompression problems. I've heard two people say that it could been a rogue current, which kind of made me blink. I had never heard of a rogue current. Others argued that whales can dive that deep. More than the mystery of the deaths though, people are talking about the way it's been handled. The story I've heard is that the captain of the ship was relieved of command and the whole thing's gone official and nobody's talking. And if any of THAT is true, than I don't think it was a current or a whale.

What lies under the ice at the top of the world? I, for one, don't need any more reasons not to go in the water.

I have never heard of a "rogue current" either, but I can imagine currents are way more complex than we mere mortals can comprehend or predict ALL the time. I would imagine if you were close enough to a whale, and it dove hard.. it could pull you with it...

An Artic Sea Nasty...

Oh, please draw it.. :) Immortaize the beastie in sharpie goodness...

Make it pretty like the green fairy in Fantasia 2000... We almost never see pretty things be nasty...

Can we all agree that it wasn't a Russian water tentacle?

I'll try... Since it made the evening news there hasn't been much in the way of updates. All we know now is that the autopsies have been finished and the cause of death is officially internal lung trauma from the decompression.

Ooh. Why must you live in such a scary place?...

I wouldn't say 'live' exactly... Exist, perhaps.

Awww... Well I hope your Christmas package gives you a brief escape from reality at least!

On the bright side, I've never heard of a place having so many parties... You probably actually *know* your neighbors there. Most of America has become enstranged to their community these days. We instead know our computer and XBox.

do you really want to get to know people who eat burried, fermented, rotting walrus tail? People who go swimming after the high school football game, you know tih the icebergs and lepard seals. people who throw disected seal carcases by the dumpster to attract polar bears. people who haven't seen the sun in 80 days or so and have had nothing to look at but snow and ice and gray. Ever seen the Shining? this is why I don't get to know my neighbors.
