Does anybody else remember when this happened? I remember seeing it on the news when I was little and being upset because my parents were so horrified. And then there was the tv movie. I wasn't allowed to stay up late enough to watch it, but I remember the commercials for it. And every time I've seen Mr. Walsh on tv since, I've felt a pang for him.
That was a bad year for my childhood innocence. It was also the year two hikers were killed on the Appalachian Trail, which isn't very far from where we lived. We had camped in that same area, before and after the murders. Those were the first 'there are bad people in the world' speeches I can remember getting. The good news is that both crimes are solved now, and while there are still bad people in the world, they are outnumbered.
