There's a walrus out behind Osaka's! It's huuuuuge. And just laying there panting on the beach. It's been there since last night. They say it's a female.

The ice is really late this year. It's still 300 miles off shore, which means this poor walrus has finished a long, hard swim. She's almost white around her head and neck, which they tell me is a sign of stress. The poor thing's exhausted.

Some local kids were poking at her earlier, so they set up some signs and barriers to keep people back. She had the good sense to collapse on a beach inside city limits, so she can't be shot. Unless she attacks somebody. So, as long as they keep the little goobers from provoking her, she should be all right.

And so should they. Imagine the coroner's report. "Was tusked, then rolled upon by an aquatic mammal the size of a sofa. Closed casket recommended."

Heehee. The thought makes me grin.
