I have failed you somehow.

Tomorrow is field trip day. We're going to the big park that has a kiddie train for them to ride. After tomorrow, they will be able to die happy because all their dreams will have come true. You can't even imagine how excited the little guys have been.

Every day, they ask me "Is today the day we go on the trip? Do we see the train TODAY??" And every day for weeks, I have said "Not yet!" and we have gone to the calendar to count the days and talked about what we're going to do and what we'll see. For WEEKS.

And today, as we were lining up for bus hall, I said "Tomorrow is the field trip! Who's excited?" In the immediate screams of "Me! MEEEE!!!" one of the children, the oldest one in class even, looked at me all bug-eyed and said, "What? Where are we going?"

I've worked with this grade level long enough that I'm not usually rendered speechless, but I just had to stare at this one for a minute. Because, wow. Really? Wow.

The kids I work with took to drawing me the other day.

There's some dispute over my coloration, but that may be the available markers more than anything. Look how sassy sea-horse me is there at the end!

Most Dreams Have at Least One Crazy Line

I dreamed there was a little vampire child named Collette. She had long claws and when I wasn't being as frightened as she wanted me to be, she stabbed them through the book I was reading. That did startle me. She tried to stab me, but I dodged and she only got my shirt. So while I was figuring out how I was going to get away with staking a cute little girl through the heart, I started noticing that all the other little kids around had gone all Rennfield on me.

Not only where they going bonkers, but their bodies were transforming into cartoony twisted shapes. Kinda like these. A kid came up to me all freaked out and started bubbling liked bad claymation. He kept saying "I'm going, I'm going!" until I freaked and yelled "No, you're not!" and clubbed him over the head with my laptop. It didn't help. He turned into a gobliny thing, flapped his arms, and flew away. Yes, he did. And then up pops Collette and she says the crazy line from this dream, which was "He'd be a perfect pet for your gryphon."

If I hadn't been dodging the mutant children, I would've been very interested in this gryphon of mine, but while this went on a little girl with long blond hair went zombie. Her hair curled up into a poodle perm and her eyes got really blue until one cracked like glass and turned yellow. Then Collette started after me and I decided I had had enough and woke up.

Once Upon a Time, Not So Far Away

Wow. Just wow.

I've been reading this.

I'm a folklore nut so I can't help but be blown away by what these kids have woven out of old stories and their present situations. (I also can't help but wonder about what could really be appearing and whispering to them.) The article is 11 years old, and I have no idea how 'true' it is. True or false, though, it's heartbreaking.
