Nov. 5th, 2005 07:58 pmOk, I've been reading a book. The whole point of it is to list the cases of all these people who died for their beliefs and did it with smiles on their faces and songs in their hearts. It's supposed to be uplifting and spiritually powerful and I guess it is, but I keep thinking of the other side of it. The people who tortured them and executed them and were just plain mean to them.
Now I'm not a big fan of humans as a group. There are a few individual ones that I trust and love completely. There are a few more that I plain ol' like to be around. And there's a scattering of them I can tolerate in small doses. And the rest I feel very little for.
Having said that though, I can not imagine hating anyone enough to hurt them like that. The book is full of tortures and having fingernails yanked out and having hot oil poured over them and other such things. And while I know I'm supposed to be amazed at the strength of those who endured it, the main thing I kept thinking was where do they find people willing to do that to other people?
So I stopped reading for awhile. It's been that kinda day. From animal cruelty in the name of art to how easily human beings turn on their own kind. Barrow is no place to contemplate the bleakness of the world.

Date: 2005-11-06 06:05 am (UTC)What's the title of that book? I read a book about the torture of Iraqi women by Saddam's old regime. The torture they endured was beyond cruelty, but, some people actually believe their cause justifies that kind of evil. The men doing the torturing took delight in their work.
Anyways, since you are in Barrow, perhaps you should stick to lighter reading...
I'm going to go answer your email to me now. :)

On the flipside of the coin, I suppose, it makes me appreciate the decent ones like your good self all the more.
