I just got back from Bimini a little while ago. It was pretty amazing. I forgot to mail my postcards though. Hmm.

Day 1
It had been my plan to put the cats in the shed with enough food and water to last until we got back. Somehow, they guessed this and hid so I couldn't do it. Fine. We left anyway. All went pretty well until we got to GA. There was a two-hour traffic jam somewhere in there. We had to turn off the a/c and then the car when it started to overheat. I started reading Country of the Young to keep from going crazy.

Day 2
We got to Jacksonville, FL, and crashed with some friends of ours there. We went out to try and watch the shuttle launch but it was too cloudy on the beach. I ended up eating a whole lot of shrimp later that day, and I also burned the bejabbers out of my feet whilst scampering around over afternoon-heated black asphalt. Perhaps not my best decision.

Day 3
My Grandma's birthday! And we got to Fort Lauderdale and got miserably lost trying to find the executive airport. Once we did find it, we were loaded up and off to Bimini. It's a teeny little place. I don't even know how to start describing all the shades of blue and green in the water. Our hotel seemed almost deserted when we got there. There was no tv or phone in the room, but the a/c worked so I couldn't complain!

Day 4
We went over to Alice Town on the ferry. There was an open market there, and museum that was full of local history and pictures of Hemingway and stuff like that. We also went to the Compleat Angler, which is a bar that used to be a hotel, that was built mostly from the wood of wrecked booze barrels. (I learned that in the museum...) We also went to the Big Game Club and signed up for snorkeling. We walked all over the place too. The customs building there is painted a bright screaming pink, so it makes for a good landmark.

Day 5
The day of storms. We snorkeled a little on the beach by our hotel to practice for the snorkeling trip before the weather got too bad. We saw a huge starfish and a few rays. It got really stormy after that. We saw the lightning hit the ocean in the distance several times and the thunder was amazing! Then the power went out and took the a/c, which was less fun. It all got sorted out though. Later, in the cool of the day, we hiked to the general store. We saw an especially evil-looking goat and were nearly carried off by mosquitos, but we got Milky Ways for our pains.

Day 6
We rode back over to Alice Town. Had a cheese burger in paradise, then rented a golf cart to tear around in. It was very hot in the back seat, and apart from some drama when the camera disappeared for awhile, all went well. Then we went on the snorkeling trip... Snrk! Ok, to begin with, we were on a boat called Destiny with three scuba divers. We went out to a place called Turtle Rock. The divers went in and headed for deeper water. The snorkelers also went in. One of them promptly got out again and got really, REALLY seasick. That left me and dad to go paddling around. It was a little deep for snorkeling... And a little rough. At one point, Dad stopped at a coral rock to fix his mask. I crawled up next to him and was immediately hit with a wave that knocked me on my head on another coral rock and took some skin off my whole right side as well. Coral rocks are kinda sharp, so when I pulled myself up again, I cut my hands. Then another wave knocked me on my knees and I cut my knees. And so forth. Long story short, I am black and blue and scraped all over. Many ouchies. But I lived! And the barracuda we saw didn't seem interested in attacking, which heartened me.

Day 7
Back to FL! We flew back to Ft. Lauderdale and then made tracks for WV. We didn't get there that night, but we stayed in a hotel with a tv and bright lamp and a phone and much softer toilet paper than we had on the island.

Day 8
And that brings us to today! I stubbed my toe on a conch shell in the living room, so Bimini isn't through with me yet it seems... The cats didn't starve, either. So yay! And on to the next adventure.
