A PLEA TO ANYONE WHO WILL BE DROPPING OFF A CHILD AT PRESCHOOL

If you have to leave, say so, and go. DON'T tell the kid you're going to stay if you intend to sneak out as soon as he/she is distracted. Yes, you escape without a scene, but unless the child is especially lacking in attention span, they will want to show you something they just made, be it sketch or block tower or whatever, and finding you gone is the four year old betrayal equivalent of twenty three stab wounds on the Senate stairs.

There is no Santa, no Easter Bunny, no Tooth Fairy, and your parents are liars who have more important things than YOU to take care of.

"They said they wouldn't leave!" a child wailed through her sobs today. "They SAID they wouldn't LEAVE!"

What am I supposed to say to that? She cried so hard she was hiccuping. And then they were twenty minutes late picking her up, so she was upset again. As uncomfortable as it is to see the farewell scenes in the classroom, I can't help but hope she calls them on it tomorrow and hangs on like a terrier to an old sock.

Don't tell them you'll stay if you're going to leave, and don't say it won't hurt when you know it will. If you think getting them into the room to get a TB shot is hard the first year, wait til they have to go back next year and they know you lied last time.

On the other hand, don't tell them "You're getting a SHOT today! With a NEEDLE!" and then leave the teacher to deal with the ensuing hysterics. That's just inhumane. For all parties.

It was better than Day 2, actually. We rode out a two and a half hour tantrum. I would've sent the kid home except that she dried up like magic when I took her picture and then started up again immediately afterwards. Uh-HUNH.

And this is why I could never become a teacher--because I'd probably punch out half of my student's parents. Why do people who don't want to have kids end up HAVING kids, anyway? Huff.

There's some frustration involved, it's true. I have to keep telling myself that I only have the children for a few hours whilst the parents have them for 20 years. Maybe longer.
